Key Requirements

  • Process Qualification: Vendors must comply with multiple drawing and military specifications, including NAVSEA Drawing 8482161 (Vulcanization), 8482159 (Vibration Damping), 8482158 (Epoxy Adhesives), and 8482160 (Gap Filling). Process qualification is required prior to accepting production orders, with requalification necessary if materials or processes change.
  • First Article Testing (FAT): Required per FAR 52.209-3. This includes tensile testing on bonded structures (IAW 8482158) to withstand a minimum 6,000 LBS load and verifying cured hardness (IAW MIL-PRF-81733). Approval of the FAT report by NUWC NWPT ISEA is mandatory before commencing production.
  • Production Lot Testing: Required, involving cured FN 10 hardness tests (IAW MIL-PRF-81733) on each batch of mixed material used for structure bonding.
  • Mercury-Free: All materials supplied must be free from metallic mercury and contamination, intended for use on submarines/surface ships. Strict protocols apply for any required mercury inclusion.
  • Quality System: Contractors must maintain a quality system acceptable to the Government, in accordance with ISO 9001 (or MIL-I-45208).
