Quick Summary

The National Institutes of Health (NIH), Office of the Director (OD) is conducting a market survey (Sources Sought) to identify qualified small businesses capable of providing a new 7T MRI system, brand name or equal to Siemens’s Magnetom Terra.X. This system, including a high-performance local gradient coil and turnkey installation, is for the Functional MRI Facility (FMRIF) in Bethesda, MD. The purpose is to provide cutting-edge tools for human brain function research. Capability statements are due by June 25, 2026.

Scope of Work

The NIH seeks a 7T MRI system with an Impulse local gradient coil, turnkey construction and installation, multinuclear support, and potential Terra to Terra.X software and hardware upgrades. This Ultra High Field (UHF) MRI system, with human safety release, will feature a local gradient coil for rapid and efficient Echo Planar Imaging (EPI), crucial for FMRI research. The acquisition aims to enhance researchers' ability to probe human brain function with higher spatial and temporal resolutions.

Key Requirements

Bidders must demonstrate capability to provide a system meeting or exceeding the following minimum specifications:

  • MRI System: 7T actively shielded superconducting magnet, local gradient system (at least 200 mT/m amplitude, 900 T/m/s slew rate), 64+ channel RF receiver system (1 MHz bandwidth, 16-bit resolution), head RF receiver coil.
  • Installation: Turnkey installation including magnet, electronics, console, power/cooling, and construction, without affecting other MRI systems. Delivery, installation, and training within 12 months of contract award.
  • Trade-in: Removal and trade-in of the existing Siemens 7T Plus system (FMRIF 7TA).
  • Training: On-site training for FMRIF staff on hardware, software, applications, and pulse sequence/reconstruction software development (minimum ten days).
  • Console: State-of-the-art host computer with neuro-MRI and spectroscopy applications, automatic shimming, real-time reconstruction, 1TB+ storage, 10 Gb Ethernet, and source code for pulse sequences.
  • Warranties: One-year parts and labor, guarantee to upgrade outdated components, and free software upgrades.
