Quick Summary

The Smithsonian Institution is conducting a Request for Information (RFI) to identify a strategic thought-partner for reimagining the Smithsonian Learning Lab platform. The goal is to enhance the accessibility, discoverability, and usability of its digital educational resources for PreK-12 teachers nationwide. This RFI is for market research purposes only and does not guarantee a future solicitation. Responses are due January 30, 2026.

Scope of Work

The Smithsonian seeks to transform Learning Lab, which currently serves over 600,000 users, to reach its goal of connecting with nearly 4 million teachers and 49 million PreK-12 students. The current platform's vast content (6M+ objects, 50K+ user collections) presents challenges in efficient content discovery and integration into instructional strategies. Key project goals include:

  • Creating a one-stop, easy-to-use, transdisciplinary learning platform that is indispensable to teachers.
  • Providing tools and scaffolding for educators to effectively teach with objects and incorporate authentic learning experiences.
  • Working in harmony with existing learning tools and platforms through integration and partnerships.

The primary audience is PreK-12 teachers, with students as a secondary audience engaging through supplemental materials. The revamped platform aims to meet teachers' needs for reliable, ready-to-go teaching resources that are quickly discoverable, align with standards, and are organized by grade level and subject.
