Fit reasons
- NAICS alignment with historical contract wins in similar service areas.
- Scope strongly matches core technical capabilities and delivery model.
Risks
- Past performance thresholds may require one additional teaming partner.
- Potential clarification needed on staffing minimums before bid/no-bid.
Next steps
Validate eligibility requirements, assign capture owner, and schedule partner outreach to confirm teaming strategy before submission planning.
Quick Summary
The Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA) is soliciting innovative proposals for its Automated Discovery for Design and Control of Turbulent Systems (AutoDIDACTS) program. This Broad Agency Announcement (BAA) seeks revolutionary advances in data-informed models and principles for aeronautical design and optimal control of turbulent systems. Proposal Abstracts are due April 15, 2026, and full Proposals are due May 20, 2026.
Purpose & Scope
The AutoDIDACTS program aims to develop generalizable models and principles for aeronautical design and the optimal control of turbulent systems, specifically excluding evolutionary improvements. The principal objective is to use precision ground-truth experimental data to derive macroscale design principles and surrogate models. Phase I (24 months) focuses on two areas:
- Developing macroscale design principles with greater generalizability and predictive capability across flow regimes.
- Creating predictive surrogate models suitable for design exploration and optimization across various airfoils and conditions. Key challenges include rigorous uncertainty quantification, model interpretability, and universality.
Contract Details
DARPA anticipates making multiple awards using Procurement Contracts, Cooperative Agreements, or Other Transaction Agreements for Research. Phase I is a 24-month base period, with a target start date of September 2026. Phase II (24 months) will address future challenge problems. Collaboration among performers is expected.
Submission & Evaluation
- Proposal Abstract Due: April 15, 2026, at 4:00 p.m. ET
- Question Submittal Closed: May 15, 2026, at 4:00 p.m. ET
- Proposal Due: May 20, 2026, at 4:00 p.m. ET Proposals will be evaluated based on Overall Scientific and Technical Merit, Potential Contribution and Relevance to the DARPA Mission, and Cost and Schedule Realism.
Eligibility & Requirements
All responsible sources, including U.S. and non-U.S. entities, are encouraged to submit. Historically Black Colleges and Universities, Small Businesses, Small Disadvantaged Businesses, and Minority Institutions are also encouraged. There is no specific set-aside, but Cybersecurity Maturity Model Certification (CMMC) Level 1 compliance is required for procurement contracts. Proposers must use specific templates for abstracts, technical/management volumes, and cost proposals, including the mandatory DARPA Cost Proposal Spreadsheet (Attachment F).
Additional Notes
Amendment 1, dated April 15, 2026, updated the BAA to add information regarding design and development teams on page 9, but confirmed no changes to proposal deadlines. Proposers should review all attachments, including those for cost volume instructions (Attachment E), technical/management volume (Attachment D), and the Associate Contractors Agreement (Attachment H), which outlines collaboration expectations.
