Fit reasons
- NAICS alignment with historical contract wins in similar service areas.
- Scope strongly matches core technical capabilities and delivery model.
Risks
- Past performance thresholds may require one additional teaming partner.
- Potential clarification needed on staffing minimums before bid/no-bid.
Next steps
Validate eligibility requirements, assign capture owner, and schedule partner outreach to confirm teaming strategy before submission planning.
Quick Summary
The U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) is soliciting proposals for Neutron Irradiation Geochronology services. This Firm-Fixed-Price Indefinite Delivery Indefinite Quantity (IDIQ) contract will support USGS 40Ar/39Ar geochronology laboratories by providing neutron irradiation of mineral and rock samples. This opportunity is Unrestricted / No set-aside. Quotations are due March 18, 2026, at 05:00 PM.
Scope of Work
The USGS requires neutron irradiation services to convert stable 39K to radioactive 39Ar for potassium content assessment in 40Ar/39Ar geochronology. These services are critical for research in economic and regional geology, geologic mapping, and natural hazard assessments. The contractor must irradiate sealed quartz ampules in a cadmium liner within a nuclear reactor core, ensuring the reactor has published neutron interference correction values. Demonstrated experience in 40Ar/39Ar geochronology irradiation is essential.
Key Deliverables
- Irradiated samples returned in sealed quartz glass ampules.
- Appropriate radioactive materials and irradiation parameter documentation.
- Ampules clearly labeled upon return.
- Performance standards require noble gas mass spectrometer measurements to show sufficient 39Ar production for precise and accurate geochronology.
