Quick Summary
NASA has issued a Community Announcement as an advance notice for the Earth Venture Orbital (EVO-1) solicitation, the first in a new series. This initiative seeks Principal Investigator (PI)-led, cost-capped investigations for Earth science operations in Low Earth Orbit (LEO). NASA is actively seeking community feedback on the approach and structure of this upcoming solicitation by April 23, 2026.
Purpose & Scope
This Special Notice serves as an advanced announcement of NASA's intent to solicit innovative Earth Venture (EV) investigations. The EVO-1 solicitation will focus on Earth science investigations that can involve space-based instruments, instruments with spacecraft, or complete missions where the PI provides all components. A key objective is to achieve faster time-to-science, with a goal of launch within 3-4 years and selection within 6 months.
Key Requirements
- Proposals will be for Earth science investigations operating in LEO.
- Investigations should be PI-led and cost-capped, with an approximate budget range (PI-Managed Mission Cost-cap - PIMMC) of $35M to $115M (in FY2026 dollars).
- NASA encourages the strategic use of commercial capabilities and the promotion of partnerships.
- PIs must identify potential non-NASA funded partnerships for continued operations and data collection/processing post-prime mission.
- NASA is committed to open science principles, including sharing data, algorithms, software, and documentation.
Eligibility & Contract Details
- Eligibility: Participation is open to all categories of U.S. and non-U.S. organizations, including educational institutions, industry, non-profits, FFRDCs, NASA Centers, and other Government agencies.
- Set-Aside: None specified.
- Contracting: Commercial contracting approaches are welcome. NASA may select one or more investigations based on PIMMC and funding availability.
Key Dates & Actions
- Feedback Due: NASA is seeking feedback on the optimal PIMMC, approach, structure, and methods for reducing time to science by April 23, 2026.
- Solicitation Release: The formal EVO-1 solicitation is expected to be released in 4Q CY2026.
- Proposal Due: Proposals will be due 90 days after the solicitation release.
