  • Brush Mastication: Masticate 65-70% of existing brush (e.g., bitterbrush, manzanita, snowbrush) to a maximum height of 6 inches, leaving 30-35% retention in untreated islands. Woody debris over 12 inches diameter and trees over 4.5 feet height are not to be masticated.
  • Road Brushing: Clear 15 feet on both sides of road centerlines, including brush, down wood, logs, and slash, to improve driving conditions.
  • Equipment: Contractor must furnish a Type 2 Excavator (minimum 100 HP, 30,000 lbs, with forestry grousers) and a mower with a mastication head. Strip mowers or skid steers with tracks and mower heads are not accepted. Equipment must be durable and weed-free.
  • Resource Protection: Adherence to wildlife restrictions (seasonal for certain units), fire protection measures (April 1 - October 31), and soil/hydrology protection.
  • Safety: A job-specific Safety Plan and specific Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) are required.
