Fit reasons
- NAICS alignment with historical contract wins in similar service areas.
- Scope strongly matches core technical capabilities and delivery model.
Risks
- Past performance thresholds may require one additional teaming partner.
- Potential clarification needed on staffing minimums before bid/no-bid.
Next steps
Validate eligibility requirements, assign capture owner, and schedule partner outreach to confirm teaming strategy before submission planning.
Quick Summary
The Department of the Army's Tobyhanna Army Depot (TYAD) is conducting market research through a Request for Information (RFI) to identify U.S. companies capable of manufacturing and supplying domestically sourced rare earth magnets for Brushless Direct Current (BLDC) motors used in small uncrewed aircraft systems (sUAS). This RFI aims to inform future procurement strategies, which may include small business set-asides. Responses are due by 1:00 p.m. EDT on February 11, 2026.
Scope of Work
TYAD requires commercial-grade rare earth magnets for three BLDC motor sizes: 3115, 2807, and 2407. The total estimated requirement is for 480,000 motors, translating to approximately 6,720,000 individual magnets (14 magnets per motor). The magnets are critical components for sUAS.
Key Requirements
- Material Type: Neodymium Magnet Grade N52SH, with specific nominal requirements for room temperature (Max Energy Product 49-53 MGOe, Remanence 1.42-1.48 Tesla, Intrinsic Coercivity >19 kOe, Coercivity 10.5kOe) and operating temperature (max 90°C, max ambient 50°C, reversible loss of magnetic field strength not exceeding -0.14% / °C).
- Coating: Triple-layer Nickel-Copper-Nickel (Ni-Cu-Ni) for corrosion resistance. Alternative coatings are acceptable if compatible with mounting adhesives like epoxy.
- Magnetization: Radially magnetized arc segments with pole orientation centered in the arc segment in the radial direction. Sets of 14 magnets are required (7 North on Outer Diameter, 7 North on Inner Diameter).
- Sourcing: All materials, including raw rare earth materials, must not be sourced from prohibited foreign countries (e.g., China, Russia, Iran, North Korea). Compliance with DFARS 252.225-7052, the Specialty Metals Amendment (10 USC 4862), and the Berry Amendment (10 U.S.C. 2533a) as implemented by DFARS 252.225-7008/7009 is mandatory.
Submission Details
Interested businesses should submit a brief capabilities statement package, not exceeding ten 8.5 x 11-inch pages (10-point font minimum, bullet format). The submission must demonstrate the ability to provide the specified products/systems, include organization details (name, address, POCs, ownership type), and address subcontracting/teaming if applicable. Submissions must be electronic, in Microsoft Word or PDF format.
Contract & Timeline
