This document outlines the "Approved Source Process" for becoming an approved source for a National Stock Number (NSN). It details the eight major components required for a Source Approval Request (SAR) package.

1. Cover Letter: Explains intent, identifies offeror (small business/corporate affiliations, CAGEC, JCP Code), and specifies the NSN and manufacturer part number of interest. If the item is on an open solicitation, that information should be included.
2. Manufacturer Brochure/Synopsis: Details manufacturing operations and capabilities.
3. Manufacturer or Supplier Statement: Certifies the offeror will perform most manufacturing operations for the proposed NSN. If an alternate manufacturer is used, details for that facility are required.
4. Drawings: Complete sets of drawings including forging, casting, technical image, and supporting data. Critical safety/mission parts require annotation of critical safety identifiers and characteristics. Proprietary information must be clearly marked.
5. Quality System Documentation: Describes the quality assurance system (e.g., MIL-Q-9858, MIL-I-45208).
6. Special Processes and Materials: Identification and control plans for difficult-to-control processes/materials (e.g., castings, forging, plating, welding, exotic metals).
7. Qualification Test Plan: Detailed explanation of how the offeror will demonstrate their part performs as well or better than the current part, including procedures, equipment, and testing location. TACOM-Warren engineers can assist with test plan development and arrangements.
8. OEM/Sub-contractor Information: For manufacturers currently producing the item for the OEM or their sub-contractors, submission of OEM purchase orders and shipping documents can expedite the process. Cross-references to OEM part numbers and military part numbers/NSNs are also helpful. Qualification testing may be waived at the discretion of engineers for these offerors.

Important Notes:

• Each SAR package is for a single NSN.
• TACOM does not accept qualification by similarity or conditional qualification.
• SAR candidates must demonstrate their item is 'as-good or better' than the currently approved part; system testing is often required.
