Scope of Work
The requirement is for non-personal medical physics services, including:
- Patient Dose & Staff Exposure Optimization: Reviewing and recommending improvements for radiology program policies, procedures, and protocols to ensure patient and staff safety, and minimize patient dose. This includes topics like imaging justification, pre-procedure screening, staff qualifications, ALARA principles, patient dose estimation, and protection of pregnant patients/workers.
- Image Quality & Dose Balance: Providing consultation to optimize the balance between image quality and patient dose, evaluating patient dose/Entrance Skin Exposure against diagnostic reference levels (e.g., FDA NEXT), and verifying optimization processes.
- Device Performance & Quality Control: Conducting activities per AAPM Report 74 and other standards, assisting in establishing a facility radiology quality assurance program.
- Equipment Recommendations: Identifying equipment not in proper working condition and providing recommendations for repair or servicing (contractor will not provide maintenance).
- Acceptance Testing & Surveys: Performing acceptance testing for new x-ray devices and conducting additional equipment and Radiation Shielding Surveys when directed.
- Consultation: Consulting with the Lead X-Ray Technologist on patient and fetal dose determinations.
Personnel Qualifications
Services must be performed by a certified qualified medical physicist meeting the American Association of Physicists in Medicine (AAPM) definition, which requires a Master's or Doctoral degree in a relevant field and certification by an appropriate national body (e.g., American Board of Radiology). Radiation Safety Surveys must adhere to American College of Radiology (ACR) and National Council on Radiation Protection and Measurement (NCRP) standards.
