Statement of Work (SOW) / Performance Work Statement (PWS)

Argonne National Laboratory (ANL) seeks to acquire a microwave-assisted heating system for in-situ X-ray experimentation at the Advanced Photon Source (APS). The system will enable controlled microwave-material interaction studies under APS beamline conditions.

• Design, fabrication, testing, delivery, and optional installation support of a fully integrated microwave resonant cavity heating system.

• The system must utilize a TE111 microwave resonant cavity operating in the 2.4–2.5 GHz frequency band.

• Compatibility with APS experimental configurations, including high-energy diffraction, tomography, and rotating sample-stage assemblies.

• System shall include sight access with X-ray-transparent windows and bottom access for sample insertion.

• Support programmable temperature profiles, closed-loop PID control, synchronized data acquisition, and integration with APS beamline experiments.

• Provide all necessary hardware, control electronics, microwave power delivery equipment, software, instrumentation, documentation, and support.

• Base System:

  • 450 W, 2.45 GHz solid-state microwave generator (SAIREM GMS450 or equivalent)
  • Closed-loop process control system with PID routines and programmable heating profiles
  • Windows-based control computer with installed Python or LabVIEW-based control software
  • Water chiller for generator and/or cavity cooling

• Generator Capabilities:

  • Operate in TE111 mode, 2.4–2.5 GHz frequency range
  • 450 W, 2.45 GHz solid-state generator
  • Frequency sweep and tuning (2400-2500 MHz) with ~100 kHz resolution
  • Modbus RTU remote communication (RS232, RS485, Ethernet, or equivalent)
  • Analog input for external PID power control

• Process Control Unit:

  • Closed-loop PID temperature control
  • Frequency sweep and autotuning
  • Real-time monitoring (generator status, forward/reflected power, temperature)

• Control Software:

  • Python, LabVIEW-based, or equivalent
  • Generator control and monitoring
