Fit reasons
- NAICS alignment with historical contract wins in similar service areas.
- Scope strongly matches core technical capabilities and delivery model.
Risks
- Past performance thresholds may require one additional teaming partner.
- Potential clarification needed on staffing minimums before bid/no-bid.
Next steps
Validate eligibility requirements, assign capture owner, and schedule partner outreach to confirm teaming strategy before submission planning.
Quick Summary
Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory (LBNL), under the Department of Energy, is conducting market research through a Sources Sought notice to identify potential sources capable of delivering Nitronic 50 Stainless Steel forgings. These forgings are critical components for the High Field Test Facility Dipole (TFD) project, specifically for the endplates of a 15T superconducting magnet. Responses are due by June 17, 2026, at 3:00 PM Pacific.
Scope of Work
LBNL requires two (2) forgings made from Nitronic 50 (UNS S20910 / ASTM XM-19), meeting minimum properties and composition per ASTM A182. Each forging must have minimum dimensions of 845 mm (Length) x 525 mm (Width) x 263 mm (Thickness). The desired lead time for delivery is 10 weeks or less After Receipt of Order (ARO). These forgings will be used to fabricate TFD endplates, with reference drawings DF-1000-8853 (TFD END PLATE RETURN, approx. 665.724 KG) and DF-1000-5103 (TFD END PLATE LEAD, approx. 570.636 KG) providing detailed specifications for the finished components.

Submission & Evaluation
Interested parties must submit a completed LBNL RFI response document via email to Brian Zatkow (bzatkow@lbl.gov). The response document requires specific company and technical information, including confirmation of small business status, socioeconomic classifications, manufacturing facility location (relevant to the Buy American Act), inspection capabilities, documentation packages, and estimated lead times. All questions on the response document must be answered. This is for informational and planning purposes only; it is NOT a request for quote or proposal, and no subcontract will be awarded as a result. Quotes or pricing proposals will be discarded. Respondents should not include business-sensitive, proprietary, or confidential information.
Additional Notes
LBNL may use responses to structure future programs and may make them public. Responding to this RFI does not provide any advantage or disadvantage for future solicitations. LBNL may consider purchasing forgings directly or providing references to machine shops.
