Fit reasons
- NAICS alignment with historical contract wins in similar service areas.
- Scope strongly matches core technical capabilities and delivery model.
Risks
- Past performance thresholds may require one additional teaming partner.
- Potential clarification needed on staffing minimums before bid/no-bid.
Next steps
Validate eligibility requirements, assign capture owner, and schedule partner outreach to confirm teaming strategy before submission planning.
Quick Summary
The U.S. Department of Energy's Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL), managed by UT-Battelle, LLC, is seeking commercialization partners for its advanced Cryogenic DT Fusion Pellet Injection System. This Special Notice invites license applications for four patent-pending technologies designed for fusion energy fueling and cryogenic containment. Applications are due by April 27, 2026.
Scope of Technologies
ORNL is offering licensing opportunities for the following innovations:
- 5675 - Solid Conveyance with Single Phase Change Method for Cryogenic Extrusion Recirculation: A system and method for continuous, efficient formation of solid deuterium-tritium pellets, featuring cryogenic extrusion and recirculation of excess material.
- 6044 - Tritium-Compatible Cryogenic Screw Extruder for Plasma Energy Pellet Injection: An extruder for continuous production of D-T fusion fuel pellets, ensuring hermetic separation and tritium containment at cryogenic temperatures (9 K to 20 K) using specialized seals.
- 6047 - Tritium-Compatible Cryogenic Pellet Gas Gun: A gas gun for D-T pellet fueling apparatus, featuring in-situ pellet length adjustment via a guillotine slide and dual flexible metal bellows seals for hermetic separation.
- 6052 - Pressure Relief Device for Cryogenic Fusion Fuels: A safety device for D-T fusion fueling systems, constructed from tritium-compatible materials, designed to relieve excess system pressure and function as a check valve, with redundant burst disc protection.
These technologies are applicable to fusion energy fueling systems, advanced nuclear and energy research facilities, and cryogenic engineering and containment systems.
