Purpose & Background

SNL, sponsored by the DOE Office of Nuclear Energy, has significantly advanced sCO2 Brayton power cycles, which offer increased efficiency and a smaller footprint compared to traditional steam cycles. SNL has developed and operated laboratory-scale test assemblies up to 1 MWth, demonstrating cycle performance. Current challenges include confirming component viability, achieving theoretical efficiencies, and scaling up technologies for commercial applications. SNL's expertise in sCO2 recuperated closed Brayton cycle (RCBC) systems can support U.S. manufacturers.

Information Sought

NTESS is seeking recommendations from the U.S. sCO2 power cycle industry on what sCO2 component development, test rigs, and/or facilities are needed to expedite commercialization. Respondents should address:

  • Description of the technical problem and proposed solution.
  • The need for SNL's expertise and resources.
  • Description of the interested party's relevant experience, expertise, and capabilities.
  • Description of any experience partnering with Research and Development organizations (e.g., FFRDC, Universities, National Laboratories, Government Laboratories).
