Fit reasons
- NAICS alignment with historical contract wins in similar service areas.
- Scope strongly matches core technical capabilities and delivery model.
Risks
- Past performance thresholds may require one additional teaming partner.
- Potential clarification needed on staffing minimums before bid/no-bid.
Next steps
Validate eligibility requirements, assign capture owner, and schedule partner outreach to confirm teaming strategy before submission planning.
Quick Summary
Brookhaven National Laboratory (BNL) is conducting a Request for Information (RFI) to gather details on advanced confocal and super-resolution optical microscopy systems. This market research aims to inform future procurement requirements for systems supporting biological, chemical, and materials research imaging. Responses are due by January 16, 2026.
Scope of Information Sought
BNL is seeking comprehensive technical, functional, and operational information on commercial systems capable of high-speed, multi-color fluorescence imaging, including fluorescence lifetime (FLIM) and superresolution nanoscopy with Stimulated Depletion Emission (STED). Key capabilities include:
- System Integration: Unified platform combining confocal, FLIM, and STED.
- Imaging Performance: High sensitivity for live-cell and long-term time-lapse studies.
- Excitation/Detection: Tunable excitation (450–780 nm), detection up to 850 nm, with lifetime-based functional imaging and spectral separation.
- Automation: Intuitive software, automated alignment/calibration, and compatibility with standard analysis tools (ImageJ/Fiji, MATLAB, Python).
- Optical System: Pulsed White Light Laser, secondary laser ports (UV, STED depletion), high-speed beam routing, and objective lenses.
- Detection System: Tunable spectral detection (410–850 nm), high-efficiency photon detectors.
- Super Resolution: Software-based resolution improvement and STED nanoscopy (<50 nm lateral, <100 nm axial resolution).
- Mechanical: Inverted microscope stand, motorized XYZ stage (≤50 nm step), optional cryostat compatibility, compact footprint.
- Service & Warranty: Minimum 2-year warranty, installation, training, calibration, and optional annual service agreements.
Submission Details
Vendors are encouraged to provide responses to specific questions outlined in the RFI, along with standard technical documentation, brochures, estimated lead times, and budgetary pricing. Any exceptions to the BSA General Terms and Conditions should also be noted. Electronic submissions are preferred via email to Mark Brock (mbrock@bnl.gov).
Key Documents
- Attachment B - BSA General Terms and Conditions: Outlines the foundational legal and contractual framework for agreements with BNL/BSA.
- Attachment A - BNL QA 101: Establishes Supplier Quality Assurance Requirements that must be met by contractors.
