Fit reasons
- NAICS alignment with historical contract wins in similar service areas.
- Scope strongly matches core technical capabilities and delivery model.
Risks
- Past performance thresholds may require one additional teaming partner.
- Potential clarification needed on staffing minimums before bid/no-bid.
Next steps
Validate eligibility requirements, assign capture owner, and schedule partner outreach to confirm teaming strategy before submission planning.
Quick Summary
NASA's Aeronautics Research Mission Directorate (ARMD) has issued a Request for Information (RFI) for its Aeronautics Flight Accelerator (AFA) initiative. This RFI seeks input from U.S. industry, academia, and government on potential partnerships for research, development, and flight testing of revolutionary aeronautics technologies. Responses are due May 14, 2026, at 1:00 PM Pacific Daylight Time (PDT).
Purpose & Scope
The AFA initiative aims to accelerate U.S. competitiveness by promoting rapid, cost-effective flight experimentation and strengthening the aerospace industrial base. NASA is interested in technologies, concepts, and flight test campaigns suitable for cost-shared maturation, leading to flight within the next three years (FY26-FY28). Areas of interest span subsonic (including vertical lift), supersonic, and hypersonic flight technologies, encompassing propulsion, airframe concepts, integrated systems, power systems, GNC, avionics, sensors, advanced instrumentation, materials, autonomy, airspace operations, and communication technologies. NASA is considering Funded Space Act Agreements, SBIR/STTR Phase III, and similar partnership mechanisms, assuming some level of cost share. Participation is limited to U.S.-based respondents.
Industry Day
An AFA Industry Day was held on April 23, 2026, at NASA Glenn Research Center in Cleveland, Ohio, to provide an overview of the initiative, flight assets, technical capabilities, and facilitate one-on-one discussions. Registration for the Industry Day closed on April 17, 2026. Participants interested in one-on-one sessions were required to submit a two-page executive summary by April 14, 2026, using the provided AFA Industry Day Response Form. Attendance was in-person only and not a prerequisite for RFI submission.
Response Requirements
Responses to the RFI are limited to 8 pages, single-spaced, 12-point font (8-point for charts/tables), with 1-inch margins. Submissions must be in PDF format and emailed to Jenni Schnarr (jennifer.schnarr@nasa.gov) with the subject line "AFA RFI Response – [Organization Name]". Do not submit export-controlled, classified, or security-controlled information. Proprietary or business confidential information may be included but must be clearly marked.
Key Clarifications
NASA's desired outcomes include leveraging its expertise and assets for flight testing to gather data, reduce risks, and mature technology for the U.S. Aeronautics industry. Available resources include subject matter experts, test facilities, aircraft, ranges, and laboratories. Success is defined by accelerating technology development and learnings. NASA's airworthiness process is risk-based, requiring early engagement with authorities. While specific data rights are not yet defined, NASA typically seeks a Government-purpose license.
Additional Notes
This RFI is for planning purposes only and does not constitute a solicitation or commitment by the Government. NASA will not pay for information provided. Any future solicitation will be posted on SAM.gov.
