Fit reasons
- NAICS alignment with historical contract wins in similar service areas.
- Scope strongly matches core technical capabilities and delivery model.
Risks
- Past performance thresholds may require one additional teaming partner.
- Potential clarification needed on staffing minimums before bid/no-bid.
Next steps
Validate eligibility requirements, assign capture owner, and schedule partner outreach to confirm teaming strategy before submission planning.
Quick Summary
The National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) Goddard Space Flight Center is issuing a Request for Information (RFI) for a Lunar Surface Wi-Fi Transceiver. This RFI is for market research to identify potential solutions for wireless connectivity for astronaut operations and data transfer on the lunar surface, supporting the Artemis Human Landing System (HLS). Responses are due February 26, 2026.
Purpose & Scope
This RFI is solely for market research and is not a request for proposals. NASA seeks information on existing commercial off-the-shelf (COTS) or developmental solutions for a Wi-Fi transceiver capable of operating in the harsh lunar environment. The system will provide connectivity for astronauts, equipment, and data transfer.
Key Requirements
- Wireless Protocol: Wi-Fi 6 (802.11ax) or newer, backward compatible.
- Frequency Bands: 2.4 GHz or 5 GHz.
- Performance: Up to 6.5 Mbps at 200m range, minimum 3 concurrent clients.
- Environmental:
- Operational life: 3 months dormant, eight 8-hour EVAs on lunar surface.
- Vacuum, low outgassing (TML < 1.0%, VCM < 0.10%).
- Thermal: Operating -30°C to 50°C; Survival -40°C to 60°C.
- Radiation: Min 10 krad(Si) TID; immune to SEL/SEB with LET > 75 MeV*cm^2/mg.
- Physical: Cubesat class dimensions, < 1 kg mass, human space flight compatible.
- Technology Readiness Level (TRL): Minimum TRL-6.
Submission Details
Vendors should respond to specific questions regarding COTS options, Rough Order of Magnitude (ROM) for development, lead times, supply chain, heritage, testing, environmental approach, and estimated pricing. Submissions must include vendor name, CAGE code, small business status, product literature, experience (max 3 projects), and technical approach. The total submittal package is limited to 5 pages.
Eligibility & Set-Aside
This RFI aims to determine the availability of adequate Large and/or Small Business contractors. Small Businesses should note FAR 52.219-14, Limitations on Subcontracting, and include the percentage of work to be self-performed.
Important Notes
- NASA will not pay for information provided.
- Anticipated delivery date for the transceiver is June 2027.
- Monitor www.sam.gov for any future announcements.
