Fit reasons
  • NAICS alignment with historical contract wins in similar service areas.
  • Scope strongly matches core technical capabilities and delivery model.
Risks
  • Past performance thresholds may require one additional teaming partner.
  • Potential clarification needed on staffing minimums before bid/no-bid.
Next steps

Validate eligibility requirements, assign capture owner, and schedule partner outreach to confirm teaming strategy before submission planning.

Quick Summary

The Department of the Air Force (USAF) is issuing a Request for Information (RFI) to gather industry insights on Optimized Machining Parameters for AerMet 100, a high-strength alloy critical for aerospace applications. The goal is to enhance manufacturing efficiency, reduce waste, and ensure consistent, high-quality output, with an initial focus on landing gear parts. Responses are due February 5, 2026.

Purpose & Scope

The USAF Rapid Sustainment Office (RSO) seeks to understand the current state-of-the-art capabilities in machining AerMet 100, identify potential solutions and vendors, and refine future requirements. This RFI aims to address challenges such as excessive tool wear, extended machining times, and inconsistent surface quality currently experienced with AerMet 100. The overall objective is to develop and document standardized, optimized machining parameters.

Information Requested

Vendors are requested to provide detailed information on:

  • Company Overview: Experience and R&D capabilities in machining high-strength alloys, specifically AerMet 100.
  • Machining Parameters & Strategies: Recommended parameters (cutting speeds, feed rates, depth of cut), tooling, and coolant strategies, including justification and impact analysis on tool life, surface finish, and material removal rate.
  • Tooling Solutions: Recommended tooling, advantages, availability, and cost.
  • Material Analysis & Modeling: Capabilities for analyzing and modeling AerMet 100 machining behavior.
  • Testing & Validation: Methodologies for testing and validating machining performance, surface finish, and tool wear.
  • Standardization & Documentation: Experience in developing and documenting standardized practices and training materials.
  • Collaboration: Experience in collaborative partnerships.
  • Cost and Availability: Rough Order of Magnitude (ROM) for establishing and validating parameters, including material analysis, tooling, labor costs, and timelines.

Submission Details

  • Response Due: February 5, 2026, at 1400 Eastern Time.
  • Questions Due: January 26, 2026, at 1400 Eastern Time.
  • Format: Microsoft Word or PDF, not exceeding 10 pages (12-point Times New Roman font). A brief capabilities statement (max 3 pages) is encouraged and counts towards the page limit.
  • Submission Method: Email responses to randolph.hildebrandt.2@us.af.mil and andrew.gross.4@us.af.mil. The RFI number (FA8684-AM100) must be included in the email subject line.
