Fit reasons
- NAICS alignment with historical contract wins in similar service areas.
- Scope strongly matches core technical capabilities and delivery model.
Risks
- Past performance thresholds may require one additional teaming partner.
- Potential clarification needed on staffing minimums before bid/no-bid.
Next steps
Validate eligibility requirements, assign capture owner, and schedule partner outreach to confirm teaming strategy before submission planning.
Quick Summary
The National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA), specifically the NASA Shared Services Center, has issued a Solicitation (RFQ) for Sabatier Catalyst Development. This effort aims to develop, synthesize, and produce advanced Sabatier catalyst formulations to address poisoning issues in life support systems for exploration. This is a Total Small Business Set-Aside. Quotes are due by June 25, 2026, at 3:00 p.m. CT.
Opportunity Details
- Title: Sabatier Catalyst Development
- Agency: National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA)
- Office: NASA Shared Services Center
- Contract Type: Firm Fixed Price (TBD)
- Set-Aside: Total Small Business Set-Aside (FAR 19.5)
- NAICS Code: 541715
- Product/Service Code: R425 - Engineering And Technical Services
- Place of Performance: Associated with NASA's Exploration Projects and Integration Office at George C. Marshall Space Flight Center.
Scope of Work
The objective is to develop, synthesize, and produce a batch of Sabatier catalyst formulation, informed by NASA's Technical Authority, for advanced exploration systems life support. The work addresses catalyst poisoning from contaminants found on the International Space Station (ISS) and seeks future prevention solutions. Key tasks include:
- Task 1: Baseline Catalyst Synthesis and Testing: Synthesize 500 cc of a baseline catalyst (approx. 20% Ruthenium on Alumina), deliver 400 cc to NASA, and conduct comparative testing. NASA will provide the Ruthenium (III) Chloride precursor.
- Task 2: Literature Search: Identify at least three alternate catalyst formulations, with an initial recommendation for one nickel-based formulation emphasizing enhanced poison resistance.
- Task 3: Alternate Catalyst Production and Testing: Produce and test approximately 50 cc of selected alternate catalysts.
- Task 4: Commercial Catalyst Testing: Procure and test 1-2 commercially available methanation catalysts.
- Task 5: Catalyst Data Package Development: Create a comprehensive package including synthesis data, chemical formulation, quality assurance, and synthesis procedures.
- Task 6: Poisoning Tests: Conduct poisoning tests on baseline, alternate, and commercial catalysts using specified contaminants (sulfur, silicon, fluorine, carbon), developing a Test Data Package.
