Stator Cores for Small Brushless DC Motors

Request for Information (RFI) / Sources Sought

This RFI is issued by Tobyhanna Army Depot (TYAD) to identify potential commercial sources capable of manufacturing and supplying stator cores for small outrunner brushless DC motors used in small Unmanned Aircraft Systems (sUAS). The government is seeking scalable, high-volume production capabilities of up to 40,000 units per month.

• Technical Parameters:

  • Motor Design: Outrunner Brushless DC Motor.
  • Stator Diameter: 22mm to 35mm.
  • Stator Height: 6mm to 20mm.
  • Configuration: 12 coil nodes.
  • Assembly Type: Stacked and bonded lamination cores.
  • Insulation: Epoxy powder coat (or equivalent) applied to coil nodes.

• Production and Capacity: Ability to produce and deliver up to 40,000 stator core units per month with stringent quality control.

• Interested businesses should submit a brief capabilities statement package (max 10 pages, 10pt font, bullet format).

• Response must include:

  • Overview of experience with high-speed stamping press systems.
  • Customer references for similar systems.
  • If applicable, information on organizational ownership, subcontracting, and teaming.

• Responses are voluntary and will not be returned.

• No funds are available to pay for response preparation.

Statement of Work (SOW)

To procure the manufacturing and supply of critical Unmanned Aircraft Systems (sUAS) motor components, specifically stacked and insulated stator core assemblies for outrunner brushless DC motors. This is to support rapid sUAS production demands.

• Manufacture, test, and supply stator cores.

• Provide necessary labor, materials, facilities, and quality control.

• Scale production to meet high-volume delivery requirements.

• Adhere to strict domestic manufacturing and sourcing regulations.

• Motor Design: Outrunner Brushless DC Motor (stator fixed, permanent magnet rotor spins on the outside).

• Stator Diameter: 22mm to 35mm.

• Stator Height: 6mm to 20mm.

• Configuration: 12 coil nodes.

• Assembly Type: Stacked and bonded lamination cores.

• Insulation: Epoxy powder coat (or approved equivalent durable insulation) applied to coil nodes, must prevent grounding, resist environmental degradation, and ensure reliability.

• Engineering drawings will be provided by the Government upon contract award or request.

• Monthly Capacity: Up to 40,000 stator core units per month.

• Quality Control: Implement and maintain stringent quality control standards for high-volume sUAS component manufacturing.

• Scaling: Demonstrate a credible path to achieving maximum production capacity without degradation of part quality.

• Prohibited Foreign Sources: All materials must not be sourced from prohibited foreign countries.

• Restricted Nations: Materials cannot be sourced from the People's Republic of China, the Russian Federation, the Islamic Republic of Iran, and the Democratic People's Republic of Korea.

• The Contractor is responsible for enforcing these sourcing restrictions throughout their lower-tier supply chain.
