The material is designated as SPECIAL EMPHASIS material due to its critical use in shipboard systems, where failure could lead to serious injury or loss of the ship. Key requirements include:
- Inspection and refurbishment to specified drawings and military specifications.
- Compliance with toxicity and flammability requirements for non-metallic materials (NAVSEA SS800-AG-MAN-010/P-9290).
- Adherence to specific torque for item 15 (blanking plug) at 65 lbf-in.
- Cleaning in accordance with MIL-STD-1622.
- Thread inspection per FED-STD-H28 series, with System 21 as a minimum.
- Internal threads must be formed by cutting; cold forming is not acceptable.
- Physical identification in accordance with MIL-STD-130.
