Fit reasons
- NAICS alignment with historical contract wins in similar service areas.
- Scope strongly matches core technical capabilities and delivery model.
Risks
- Past performance thresholds may require one additional teaming partner.
- Potential clarification needed on staffing minimums before bid/no-bid.
Next steps
Validate eligibility requirements, assign capture owner, and schedule partner outreach to confirm teaming strategy before submission planning.
Quick Summary
The Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA), specifically the Tactical Technology Office (TTO), has issued a Solicitation (DARPA-PS-26-15) for the "Carbon Crunch" program. This initiative seeks to enable scalable, fast, and agile production of hypersonic aeroshells by developing cutting-edge composite manufacturing methods for carbon-carbon (C-C) materials. The program aims to demonstrate an end-to-end manufacturing process from raw materials to near-net-shape densification, focusing on high quality, rapid production, and quick design-cycle turnaround. This is an Other Transaction (OT) for Prototype Agreement.
Scope of Work
Performers are required to:
- Develop a new integrated process for producing C-C aeroshells.
- Demonstrate high-rate production and process agility for design changes.
- Assemble teams to demonstrate the entire aeroshell production process, from preform layup to near-net-shape aeroshells.
- Focus on reducing C-C material densification time and associated manual labor.
- The scope includes the aeroshell and potentially hot structure portions (e.g., leading edge, nosetips). DARPA is not interested in novel thermal protection system materials, cooling technologies, parallelizing existing processes, processes reliant on touch labor, or final machining methods.
Contract Details
- Type: Other Transaction (OT) for Prototype Agreement under 10 U.S.C. § 4022.
- Set-Aside: None specified; solutions are encouraged from all responsible sources, including large and small businesses, and nontraditional defense contractors.
- Cost Sharing: May be required (as indicated by model OT templates).
- Period of Performance (PoP) Start: Estimated October 2026.
- Awards: Multiple awards are anticipated.
