Scope of Work
This project involves mechanically dredging the New Haven Harbor Federal Navigation Project (FNP) to deepen the navigation channel and turning basin from 35 feet to 40 feet below mean lower low water (MLLW). The effort will also expand channel limits: the entrance channel to 600 feet, the bend through breakwaters to 800 feet, and the main channel to 500 feet.
Key tasks include the removal of:
- Up to 3,500,000 CY of fine-grained silt and organic material
- 850,000 CY of medium-to-fine grained sand material
- 60,000 CY of rock (some areas may require blasting or pre-treatment)
Rock in the channel must be removed to a minimum elevation of -42 Feet MLLW with a 2-foot allowable overdepth, while other areas require dredging to -40 Feet MLLW with a 2-foot allowable overdepth. Dredged material will be placed into scows for transport and disposal at the Central Long Island Sound Disposal Site (CLDS) and up to four local beneficial use sites within the harbor. A minimum production rate of 300,000 CY per 30 consecutive calendar days is expected. Environmental coordination and permitting have been completed.
