- Material Specifications: Balls must meet SAE-AMS-6931 or ASTM-B367 Grade C-5 (6AL-4V). Seats require MD71-GG Mearthane (Graphite Filled Urethane) from Mearthane Products Inc., with specific hardness, specific gravity, tensile strength, compression-deflection, tensile impact, and water absorption values.
- Testing & Certification: Required tests include Hydrostatic Test or Dye Penetrant Inspection for balls, and Non-Destructive Tests for weld repairs. Extensive material certifications (chemical/mechanical analysis) and test certifications are mandatory, with submission via Wide Area Work Flow (WAWF) to Portsmouth Naval Shipyard.
- Quality Assurance: Contractors must maintain a quality system compliant with ISO-9001 (or MIL-I-45208) and calibration systems per ISO-10012/ANSI-Z540.3/ISO-17025 (or MIL-STD-45662). Only sources with an acceptable Quality Assurance Manual (WSSTERMLZ02) are eligible.
- Traceability: Strict traceability is required for Level I/SUBSAFE systems, with unique traceability numbers and permanent material marking per MIL-STD-792.
